The simplest definition of prayer is communicating with God. That’s it. Did you miss it? Let me say it again. Prayer is simply communicating with God. That one uncomplicated thought began to revolutionize my whole prayer life. What is communication? It’s transferring a thought, feeling, emotion, or idea to another person. So prayer is giving God my thoughts, feelings, emotions, and ideas, by whatever means works. It doesn’t have to be formal. It doesn’t have to be long and dry. It’s simply communicating.
I have a couple of favorite relatives, but because they’re so far away I tend to ignore them-even though they have mailboxes, email addresses and telephone numbers. Today, I’ll get back in touch.
We cannot all write like Lincoln or Shakespeare, but even the least gifted of us has the incredible instrument, our voice, to communicate the range of human emotions. Why would we deprive ourselves of that?

I hope we can inaugurate a new humility in our use of religious language, which for me is the very proof that it is authentic.
